About Realizing DPP

The Realizing Diabetes Prevention Program began as a symposium held on November 5, 2018, organized by Phil Trotter and Dr. Mo Ali and hosted by Emory University, Atlanta, GA.

The Realizing DPP 2018 Symposium was a landmark event that assembled lifestyle coaches, program suppliers, and healthcare payers across the United States to discuss scaling the delivery of the National DPP and Medicare DPP.

The forum revealed a significant list of implementation challenges that needed to be overcome for successful state-by-state DPP access.

Phil Trotter continued developing Realizing DPP and organized a subsequent Lifestyle Coach Symposium on December 11, 2019, hosted by the Diabetes Coalition of Mississippi in Jackson, MS. This event focused on establishing a lifestyle coach workforce for statewide delivery of the National DPP and Medicare DPP. Over 100 attendees were enthusiastic about the opportunities for lifestyle coach positions but were most concerned about the cost of training and compensation for delivering the DPP lifestyle change programs.

During the pandemic period 2020-21, Phil was appointed to chair the prevention workstream for the Diabetes Coalition of Mississippi and also continued his work to overcome the implementation challenges revealed for the National DPP and Medicare DPP delivery during the DPP symposiums.

To solve these implementation issues, he began to plan for a statewide ecosystem that included a lifestyle coach workforce to deliver the DPP in Mississippi.
